Dalefield School pupils have taken out the top spot in the inaugural Times-Age school newspaper competition, and with it, a $1500 cash prize.
Twenty-four entries were submitted by schools around the region with the ‘Dalefield Star’ coming out on top.
Wairarapa Times-Age publisher Andrew Denholm was excited to visit the school on Tuesday to hand over the cheque.
“We’re trying to promote literature and reading for kids who one day want to get into the newspaper industry.”
The paper was put together by nine pupils, with Tessa Stokes acting as editor and Anais Buchanan as sub-editor.
The pupils told Denholm the skills they had learned through the project, which included better vocabulary, learning what open and closed questions are and how to manage people.
Senior teacher Jeanette Stokes, who assisted the pupils with putting the paper together said they discovered new skills in the pupils they didn’t know were there.
Assistant learning leader Tracy Hewlett said the staff will be discussing with the pupils how best to spend the money, but it will likely go towards an experience outside the classroom.
“For us to go out even on a bus to Carterton is $250,” she said.
The second prize of $1000 was awarded to Whareama School for its ‘Whareama School Times Age’. Greytown School’s ‘Greytowner’ finished third, winning $500.
The winning Dalefield Star is printed as a centre insert in today’s Times-Age.
