The person who illegally dumped a large amount of rubbish in rural Eketahuna has been caught and issued a fine.
About two weeks ago, the person dumped rubbish, which included rotting animal carcasses, household rubbish, and tyres, at Stirling Bridge near Eketahuna.
Then on July 15, the rubbish pile was set alight, however, Tararua District Council do not know who did it.
“The burning of the rubbish made no difference as the inspector had gone down the day after it was reported and took photos,” a council spokesperson said.
The culprit, who the council said was not from Eketahuna, was caught that day.
“The costs incurred will be passed on to the culprit and a fine imposed.”
The spokesperson said they had seen “larger amounts of dumped rubbish” across the district.
Up until the pile was set alight, the council received four complaints.
Over the past two-and-a-half years, the council has handed out 16 infringement notices for illegal dumping.
While it can be hard to pin down the culprits, a council officer said that “all depends on what information is available”.
What about a name and shame, give them full barrels .
Good job, people should be more willing to come forward on these matters
