After more than a year under wraps, Masterton’s Countdown supermarket is looking refreshed.
Construction and refurbishment of the building began in March 2017 and 16 months later, the store is getting ready to celebrate its completion.
Only two exterior walls of the old building remain, store manager Adam Hall said. Everything in between had been upgraded.
“We’re really excited to have just completed our store refurbishment – we know it’s been a long time in the making but we hope our customers will enjoy the refreshed store and some great new features.”
Thirty-four car parks have been added as well as a new self-checkout service.
There was more retail space on the shop floor and a new upgraded space for the workers.
Hall has been working with Countdown for about 14 years, two-and-a-half of which had been spent at the Masterton store.
He said construction went rather smoothly – save for “the odd hiccup”, one of which caused a water feature to spout temporarily from the roof.
The supermarket will be celebrating the refurbishment with a community day on July 21 where there will be product sampling, face-painting, and other activities for children.

The new store is wonderful.
BUT I notice (I am 68 ) there is only one seat outside. Often there are 5-6 people waiting for taxis. People no longer give up seats for the elderly.
Also more rubbish bins. And not small one’s with a plastic liner. Some one always pushes the liner in the bin.
The ones with a central hole are better. But by early afternoon rubbish and butts spillover onto the ground. Very unsightly.
Please keep the store front clean and attractive.
