A project two years in the making will officially come to an end this Saturday in Greytown.

The Greytown Rugby Club has undergone extensive renovations, and the final result will be officially unveiled this Saturday at the club’s Old Timers Day.

Greytown Rugby Club chairman Andy Holmes said the finished product was the result of two years of fundraising and applying for grants.

“The committee has worked hard behind the scenes, along with the community, to raise enough funds with the help of funding avenues like Lotteries Commission and Masterton Licensing Trust.

“The committee organised two big fundraisers locally – a casino night and golf tournament which the community and club senior players and supporters embraced.”

All memorabilia and photos are now displayed on the walls and in a glass cabinet at the clubrooms, while the bar has been extended, the roof completely redone, and new furniture and decorating added.

The aim is to make the rugby club a hub for sport in Greytown, and Greytown Netball and the Kia Kaha Hockey Club will also have full access to the clubrooms and its facilities.

“As is the case with the rugby club, Greytown Netball and Kia Kaha Hockey will have access to the clubrooms for their monthly meetings, prize givings, AGMs and any other potential fundraising or functions in general,” Holmes said.

“They will also make use of the changing rooms and kitchen as they wish.”

Saturday’s opening day ties in with the rugby club’s Old Timers Day, in which spectators are expected to be out in force to watch the club’s junior and senior teams play.

The JAB sides will kick things off in the morning, before the senior teams both take on Carterton in the afternoon.

Last year Holmes had spoken about how the three sporting codes would need to work together to utilise land space and growing numbers in their respective sports.

“A taskforce recommended greater sharing of club facilities.

“Allowance has been made for television screens, giving the clubhouse flexibility to project images which will reflect the fact that it is a multipurpose facility.”
