Drink-driving
enforcement
During this month and next, Wairarapa Police will be ramping up their enforcement of drink-driving and alcohol licence laws in the region. The police operation is focused on cracking down on dangerous drivers and will involve police stopping drivers and conducting breath tests, as well as dedicated alcohol checkpoints. Police will also be visiting licensed premises to ensure they are looking after their patrons and that alcohol licenses are up to date. Anyone who thinks they have had too much to drink to drive is encouraged to instead make use of public transport, the dedicated shuttles found at some venues, or the services of a designated sober driver.

There may be stop-go signs in place during this time. More info can be found at tararua.govt.nz.
Swim class
Registrations are now open for 25 participants in a free women’s-only swimming course at Masterton’s Trust House Recreation Centre. The classes are designed for beginners and people who feel afraid of water. The 10-lesson course runs from Monday to Friday over both weeks of the school holidays [8-19 July]. Childcare will be provided on site, and the organisers can also provide appropriate swimwear for people who don’t have their own. The venture is run by Neighbourhood Support in collaboration with Welcoming Communities, and funding provided by Masterton South Rotary Club. More information is available at mstn.govt.nz [search: ‘Women’s Swim Class’].
