Violet Fisher scored five goals as Wairarapa United won a high-scoring Capital Women’s Division match with Western Suburbs 7–5 at Endeavour Park, Whitby on Sunday.
The 14-year-old Solway College student bagged a first-half hat-trick and added two more in the second 40 minutes, while Ann O’Connor found the back of the net for the other two goals.
The win lifted United to fifth in the first-round championship, with a two-win, two-loss record. They next host third-placed Wellington United Opals at the Solway Showgrounds at 2 pm Sunday.
DV Skulls have a four-point lead in Wairarapa Men’s Division One after their 5–0 trouncing of second-placed Douglas Villa Cam’s Flooring on Saturday. Greytown Tremains scored the only goal of their clash with Progressive Engineering Masterton Athletic, and Carterton Redbacks won by default over Featherston United Property Brokers.
In the combined division two and three, Featherston defeated Greytown The Offering 8-0, the same score posted by Greytown Property Brokers against Martinborough. Carterton Goal Diggers were 3–0 winners over McAuley’s Masterton, Carterton Reapers beat Masterton Lions 6–3, and Masterton Ziggy’s Glass Presidents had a 4–0 win over Carterton Raiders, while Douglas Villa Vets and Greytown Umbrella Group Spartan both won by default.
In Wairarapa Women’s Football, Greytown Gems were too good for Martinborough, winning 3–0, and DV Mitre 10 Mega Geebeez and Carterton Royals battled to a scoreless draw.
HOCKEY
Gladstone Bulls continued their strong form in Wairarapa Men’s Division One, crushing Tremains Red Star 11–1, giving them a remarkable goal difference of plus 61 [75–14] after seven games. Carterton Vets were convincing 7–1 winners over Dalefield Dodgers, and Featherston accounted for JNL 4–1, while leaders Comvita Kia Kaha won by default from Old Boys.
Dalefield remain unbeaten in Women’s Division One after their 4–1 triumph over Tremains Red Star; East Coast edged Gladstone Gold 2–1, and Comvita Kia Kaha had a 2–0 win over Featherston.
The Women’s Division Two winners were Coasties, 3–1 over Featherston Foxies; Eketāhuna Tuis took out Gladstone Heifers 4–0; Martinborough defeated Featherston Force 4–1; and Property Brokers were 3–0 victors over Wairarapa Mitsubishi.
INDOOR BOWLS
Two extra ends were needed to find the winners of the Wairarapa Open Pairs Championship played at the Hogg Crescent Complex on Sunday.
Four of the 14 teams qualified for the playoffs, which were won by Peter and Sarndra Bain over Murray Larkin and Karen Armitage, and Logan Mikoz and Janie Leighton over Donald Leighton and Tina Patrick.
The final was closely fought and finished in a 6–6 tie after 10 ends. The first extra end was drawn with two bowls touching the jack, forcing a second tiebreaker, which the Bains won.
Greytown’s South Wairarapa Workingmen’s Club took the major spoils at the Chartered Clubs’ Over the Hill Trophy played at the Porirua Club on Saturday, with Masterton’s Horseshoe Club finishing runners-up.
In Interclub, Central defeated East 6–4, and the Horseshoe beat Clareville in the first round played last Wednesday.
Clareville retained the Tararua Challenge Trophy with a 4–1 win over Central, winning the men’s and women’s singles, triples and fours.
