Former Rathkeale and Wairarapa College student Matt Stubbs has won the BMW Open A National Championship, wrapping up the title at the final round held at Hampton Downs.
A first, second, and fourth in the final three races was enough to secure the championship with an impressive 2345 points, 61 points clear of runner-up Graham Ball.
Stubbs began his racing in go-karts at the Kaitoke track in Upper Hutt. He then took to racing Formula First open wheelers in the late 2000s, and his success led to him winning a scholarship to Australia. There, Stubbs raced for the Beacham Formula Vee Race team and was crowned the Australian National Champion in two consecutive years.
Stubbs returned to New Zealand in 2018 to live in Tauranga and now concentrates on the BMW Race Driver Series.

Masterton Swimming Club senior Tana Baker-Sefo has qualified for five events at the NZ Age Group Swimming Championships in Hastings next week. Baker-Sefo has qualified in the top 20 in all five events. A very promising breaststroker, he is seeded 10th in the 100m breaststroke and 8th in the 200m breaststroke.
Others to qualify are club co-captain Jack Younger, although he won’t be able to attend, and Charli Grenfell in the Girls 15 years 100 butterfly, in which she is ranked just outside the top 20.
