Serious assault
Police responded to reports of an assault at a commercial premises in Main St shortly after 7.30 pm on Monday. A police spokesperson said there were no reports of injuries, but enquiries are being made into the matter.
Councillor chat
Masterton District Council is inviting the public to a meet and greet with councillors to talk about the draft long-term plan. Locations are a pop-up today from 11.30am to 1.30pm at the Masterton District Library, 54 Queen St, and at the Town Square Food Trucks in front of the Town Hall on Thursday between 5pm and 7pm.
Road closures
NZTA has advised of upcoming temporary road closures on Anzac Day [Thursday, April 25] in Featherston and Greytown. SH2 will be closed in Greytown between the intersection of Hastwell St and Kuratawhiti St from 9am until 1pm in both directions. SH2 in Featherston near the intersection with Wallace St will also be closed in both directions between 8am and 11.30am. NZTA advises people to plan their journeys accordingly.
Infested track
The Department of Conservation has reported a large infestation of what may be Argentine ants on the Tararua Track between Cattle Ridge and Roaring Stag huts, around 560 metres from Cattle Ridge Hut at about 850 metres altitude. To avoid the risk of ant bites or spreading this pest species further, visitors are advised not to stop to rest or put their packs down in the area.
DoC bookings
Non-Great Walk Department of Conservation [DoC] huts, lodges, campsite and cottage bookings opened yesterday. DoC said bookings for the 2024-25 season are staggered, giving people making multiple bookings more of a chance to secure their preferred dates. The season runs from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2025. Bookings will open at 9:30am on the dates below: South Island campsites, April 9; North Island campsites, April 11; Huts, April 16; Tōtaranui Campground, April 17; Sole occupancy lodges, cabins and cottages, April 18; Momorangi Bay Campground, April 23. Bookings for the Great Walks open in May, with specific dates to be announced later in April.
