GOOD
It’s always good to light up the column with a bit of local success, and leading the way are our two teams in the Capital Football Leagues, with Tumu Douglas Villa sharing the top of the table in division one with their second big win, a 5–0 thumping of Brooklyn Northern United, and Greyfriars Motel Greytown kicked off division two with a 4–1 win over Tawa Reserves away.
Former Masterton Red Star junior Joel Hintz, now based in Hawke’s Bay, made his Super Rugby debut for the Western Force, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 50–3 loss to the Blues at Eden Park, although the outcome was not what the big prop would’ve wanted.
Club rugby is back, and going by the good-sized crowds at the grounds, plenty of people were out enjoying grassroots rugby at its best. Wins went to Marist, Greytown, Martinborough, and East Coast, and if you want to relive some of the action, check out the Wairarapa Bush Facebook page and their tries of the week; you can even vote for your favourite, and there are some outstanding five-pointers to choose from.
Talking of brilliant tries, does it get much better than the NZ Warriors’ 34–4 demolition of the Rabbitohs? Could this finally be “Da Wahs” year? Aussie legend Billy Slater reckons so. Let’s not get carried away yet, but they are looking good.
Kiwi Chris Wood’s goalscoring spree continued for Nottingham Forest, netting for the fourth straight game, although it was all in vain as the battling side were beaten 3–1 by Spurs.
The shock retirements of New Zealand football international record-holder Ria Percival, with 161 caps, and Paralympic shot put champion Lisa Adams would normally not be in the good column, but both are calling it quits on their own terms, and that is good.
And how about an AU$10 million filly to wrap up this section? That is what a yearling filly from four-time Cox Plate winner fetched at the Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney.
BAD
A 4–3 loss to Toa was not the result that Farriers Dalefield wanted to hit off the defence of their Wellington Women’s Hockey Premier Championship, but apart from a bad first quarter where they conceded two goals to counterattacks there were some encouraging signs.
Everton being docked another two points put the EPL club from the blue side of Liverpool only two points clear of the drop zone. Although it is good to penalise the perpetrators, plenty of questions are being asked – what about Manchester City and Chelsea? Not a good look for the EPL!
Bad and boring! Who really watches Formula One these days? We’ve become used to processions over recent decades, and Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix did little to change that, although there was a crash on the first lap – whoopdee-doo!
UGLY
Rabbitohs star Latrell Mitchell’s two dumb moments of an elbow into the face of Shaun Johnson and tip tackle of Tohu Harris add up to be ugly, and he deserves three weeks on the sidelines.
Warriors hooker Freddy Lussick faces eight weeks of watching from the stands after his ugly attempt to charge down a kick from Lachlan Ilias left the latter with a broken leg. of the Rabbitohs?
