Top prices for beef cattle

A good line up of two-year-old angus hill country steers was met with strong demand from Manawatu buyers at yesterday’s cattle fair at the Masterton Saleyards.

The annual Martinborough and Masterton spring cattle fair saw many top prices realised with the majority of cattle staying within Wairarapa or heading to Manawatu.

PGG Wrightson area livestock manager Steve Wilkinson said with fine weather sticking around farmers took a positive outlook and produced good result for vendors.

The two-year-old angus hill country steers fetched a top price of $1535 a head.

Manawatu buyers dominated as the medium steers off Wairarapa hill country suit Manawatu farm land.

“They take them through and grow them for big weights,” he said.

Medium steers were going for around $3.40 to $3.50 a kg.

“A very good line of yearling heifers from Birch Hill in Martinborough made $1210 [per head] and stayed local for breeding,” Mr Wilkinson said.

Top yearling steers were offered by Glendonald Station and made $1345, and stayed local.

Prices and demand were similar to last year’s annual cattle sale, he said.

“It was a good sale, the fine weather lately meant everyone is starting to get a bit of grass and everyone was pretty well supported, a good result for our vendors.”
