Masterton bowler Wendy Mitchell had a weekend to remember, walking off the Greytown greens with two Bowls Wairarapa Women’s Champions of Champion titles.
On Saturday, Mitchell combined with Robyn Schischka to take out the pairs, and she backed that up on Sunday with triumph in the singles.
Mitchell and Schiscka started their pairs campaign with an easy 24–4 win over Lansdowne’s Deb Severn and Diedre Walker in the first round, but they were pushed to the limit by Carrington pair Irene Brien and Shirlye Carew in the semifinal before prevailing 17–16.
That set up a final against the Martinborough duo of Maryanne Ashworth and Shirley Poutu, which Mitchell and Schischka controlled, winning 22–8.
In the singles, Mitchell dispatched Park’s Lorraine Liggins 21–10 in the first round before capturing the big scalp of Wairarapa selector Tanya Wheeler from Martinborough 21–14 in the semifinal. She then met Carol Voller [Carrington Crackerjacks] in the final, scoring a comfortable 21–12 win.
Masterton’s Ian Monaghan continued his recent good form, winning the Men’s Champion of Champions and his 74th Wairarapa centre title with victory over Martinborough’s Ross Gillett 21–10 in the decider. Monaghan had earlier beaten John Harmon [Park] 21–11 in the first round and Carrington’s Geoff Balmain 21–17 in the semifinals.
The Greytown combo of Dean Hands and Steve Willis claimed the Men’s Champion of Champions Pairs, beating the Martinborough pair Hayden Frew and Gavin Hamlyn 20-15 in the final after defeating the experienced Featherston duo Doug Bennett and Les O’Donovan in the semifinals.
