Remutaka crash

Emergency services responded to a crash on SH2 Remutaka Hill on Saturday just before 11.30am. A spokesperson for NZTA Waka Kotahi said the crash involved multiple vehicles and occurred near the hill’s summit on the Featherston side. The road was closed between the Kaitoke and Featherston gates until 11.55am, when it opened under stop/go traffic control while the crash was cleared. The spokesperson noted that wet weather means drivers should take extra care on the roads and drive to the conditions. Police also responded to the crash, and a spokesperson confirmed there were no reported injuries.

Weekend fires

Aside from putting in a long day to put out a two-hectare grass fire on Saturday [see page one], the region’s brigades were kept busy with a few other calls, including attending a rubbish fire in Featherston and a bonfire in Opaki on Saturday, and another rubbish fire in Masterton yesterday. A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson confirmed that none of the jobs required any additional assistance.

Weekend
police calls

Police attended a range of calls over the weekend, including a crash on Masterton’s Queen St on Saturday. Police arrived at the scene at 3pm, but a spokesperson said that one of the cars involved left the scene prior to police arrival. They confirmed there were no injuries, and the road was not blocked. Police were also called to a dispute at Masterton Hospital between partners at 3.15am Sunday morning. A spokesperson for police said that one man was removed from the hospital for the night. Later in the morning at 9.15am, police were called to a report of wilful damage at a rural property in East Taratahi, but the spokesperson said there was nothing of note about the situation.

Road closures

A reminder from NZTA Waka Kotahi that SH2 Waingawa, Cornwall Rd to Hughes Line, is closed for nights this week for chip sealing. The closure is from 8pm to 6am until [and including] Thursday night. A detour is signposted via local roads. Also closed tomorrow between 7am-5pm is SH53 at the Lower Tauwharenikau River Bridge for maintenance works. A detour via SH2 is available.
