Local athletes produced some outstanding results in the first of the Masterton Summer Series held at the Colin Pugh Sports Bowl on Saturday.
The World Athletics Approved Event attracted several leading athletes from the lower North Island with valuable world ranking points on the line.
Promising middle-distance athlete Liam Lamb continued his recovery from illness, which had curtailed his 2023 European campaign, with an easy victory in the men’s 1500m. Lamb won with a time of three minutes 51.88 seconds, more than 12 seconds ahead of Joe Martin from Scottish Harriers.
Dual Special Olympics World Games medallist Josh Taylor was the only other local winner on the track, doing the Para 100m and 400m double.
Other placing went to Aleksandra Domanski, second in the women’s 100m, April Milne with a second in the women’s 400m and third in the 200m, and Bianca Nicholas, who was runner-up in the women’s 2000m steeplechase.
In field events, locals came away with five victories. Domanski won the women’s long jump with a best leap of 4.90m to complete a good meet.
Lyon Rodger jumped 5.65m to win the men’s long jump, Clara Andrew won the women’s high jump with a 1.41m jump, Theresa Bartlett threw 8.57m to win the masters women’s shot put, and Mia Bartlett won the women’s open shot put with a best put of 7.60m, and was second in the open women’s discus with a best throw of 29.78m.
