Construction is coming
Work on the Fitzherbert St level crossing upgrade in Featherston has begun. It will run 24/7 and is scheduled to finish in the early hours of the morning on January 8. This work is part of the KiwiRail capacity upgrade programme that is designed to increase capacity and capabilities on the rail lines to allow for more train services on the Wairarapa Line. KiwiRail will be fixing the current crossing surface and using cranes and trucks, and has warned that some of the work will be noisy, including beeping trucks as they reverse. “We will also use temporary lighting while we work at night,” a statement said. All vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be diverted while the work is underway, and the bus stop near Quinwah Takeaways will be moved temporarily. Signage and further instructions will be set up on the roads.
Motorbike crash
Police responded to reports of a crash on Remutaka Hill SH2 at 11am yesterday. A spokesperson said this incident involved a motorcycle and that, fortunately, there were no injuries recorded. There were no reports of any road blockages.
Wairarapa weather
The sun’s back out today, with MetService forecasting a high of 24 degrees Celcius in Masterton. There will be high cloud over the region at times, with north westerlies developing this morning. Tomorrow is likely to be cloudier, with isolated showers becoming widespread and possibly heavy in the afternoon and evening. Westerlies are likely to accompany the rain but will ease in the evening.
Frisky Feathy
Featherston is making a name for itself around the country, and this time it’s not for having the most bookstores per capita but instead for purchases made online through the popular adult toy website Adult Toy Megastore [ATMS], which releases a list each year of the “Top 10 NZ towns that bought the most sex toys” per capita. This year, Featherston has come in at number eight on the list. The top spot was taken out by Foxton, followed closely behind by Winton, Wellsford, Hokitika, Otorohanga, Bulls, and Warkworth, with Inglewood and Ōtaki taking ninth and tenth place respectively.
