A young local man’s dream of hosting his own fashion show came true last week thanks to Idea Services – New Zealand’s largest provider of services for people with intellectual disabilities.
A total of 18 models wearing striking colours of blue, white, and orange strutted the catwalk, all wearing the garments they made themselves over the year.
The host and creator behind the fashion show – Glenn Karaitiana – said this year’s garments were about showing off each individual’s idea of what fashion means to them.
“The colours that have been chosen are neutral and show an environmental theme,” he said.
“This has been a dream of mine, and at the start of the year, after sitting down with [mentor] Emily, I decided that I would love the opportunity to host a fashion show and set this as a goal for myself.”
All the garments were made from donated recycled materials, with Karaitiana’s outfit – which was inspired by Lisa, a member of the popular South Korean K-pop girl group Blackpink – made from old curtains.
“Lisa has been labelled a fashion icon for her fearless approach to style and the ability to constantly push boundaries,” Karaitiana said.
“We would like to thank all staff, parents, and volunteers, especially Carol Mullany, who dedicated a huge amount of time and dedication to help me succeed in finally achieving my goal this year.
“Special thanks to all my peers for agreeing to my goal and helping to make a dream of mine come true.”
So inspirational. Kapai Glenny!
