Hotspot watch
Niwa continues to monitor soil moisture patterns across New Zealand and Wairarapa has, thus far, avoided becoming a hotspot. However, Niwa officially put Manawatū-Whanganui and the Kāpiti Coast in the hotspot category. Hotspots are regions that are experiencing significant soil moisture deficits, and persistent hotspot regions have the potential to develop into drought. The New Zealand Drought Index map also noted abnormally dry conditions in parts of Wellington. Showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in Wairarapa for the early part of this week before high pressure will then bring generally dry weather. Rainfall expectations from mid-week onward are “meagre” and moderate soil moisture decreases are likely in the upper and eastern North Island.
Police reports
Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Saturday at about 7.30am on Te Kopi Rd near Te Whiti Rd. There were no reports of injuries or road blockages. A second, single-vehicle crash just before 4pm on Masterton Castlepoint Rd prompted a police response. However, there were no injuries or road blockages. Reports suggest the driver may have crashed into a small bank.
Library plans
Part of Masterton District Council’s Long Term Plan deliberations will include an upgrade of the Masterton library. At a meeting last week, councillors decided to put up three options for consideration; do nothing, do basic maintenance, or upgrade the facility entirely. The library is considered “one of Masterton’s prime assets but is now simply too small to operate the way it should”. An upgrade of the library has been in the planning for some time and an upgrade would be expected to assist in becoming a more functional space. All three options for the library will go out for public consultation.
Leaks fixed
South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] have announced that Wellington Water has successfully resolved three leaks in South Wairarapa last week. “Wellington Water has dedicated significant efforts to address leaks across the region,” SWDC said. The public can report leaks to the Council through their website or by calling 06 306 9611. “If you’ve reported a leak, rest assured that the team is committed to prompt resolution, prioritising based on urgency,” SWDC said.
