Bridge
restrictions
Following a visual inspection of Riddiford’s Bridge on Te Awaiti Rd, South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] has placed temporary traffic restrictions on the structure as a safety precaution. Only light vehicles [less than 3500kg] will be permitted to cross the bridge, and they must travel at only 10kmh when crossing. Signage is in place while an urgent detailed assessment is commissioned by SWDC. The visual inspection noted “significant cracks in the supporting piers”.
Windy weather
The brief but brutal storm that blew through the Wellington region may have left Wairarapa, but according to MetService some parts of the region are not yet out of the woods when it comes to wild weather. A strong wind watch was issued for Hawke’s Bay and the Tararua District yesterday, with MetService stating the westerly winds might approach severe gale in exposed places. The strong wind watch was in place from 11pm last night to 8am this morning.
Police reports
Police were called to several incidents on Tuesday night following reports of fighting across Masterton. One report identified a group of people fighting between Albert St and Victoria St. Police spoke with those involved and no further action was required. Across town on Cole St a report was received of a group of youths having a “disagreement”, though when police arrived, nobody involved could be located. And in good news, a stolen vehicle was located on Tuesday evening and was able to be reunited with its owner yesterday.
Rugby icon comes to town
Iconic rugby coaching legend Sir Wayne Smith is in Masterton on Monday to help raise money as part of the ongoing Wellington Free Ambulance Build Wairarapa Station fundraising events. ‘An Evening with Sir Wayne Smith’ gives attendees the opportunity to hear from and put their questions to Sir Wayne. Signed copies of his latest book Smithy will also be available on the night, thanks to Hedley’s Books. which will also be donating a portion of book sales on the night. Tickets are limited and able to be purchased online through Eventfinda, by phone, or in person at the iSite centres in Masterton or Martinborough.
