North takes on South

TENNIS

The first half of the Wairarapa Tennis Interclub season will wrap up today with the playing of the North vs South fixture at Martinborough. The fixture is doubling as a trial for the senior representative team to play in the lower North Island Hexangular tournament in March. It will played as the best of 16 rubbers – eight singles, four doubles and four mixed doubles.

The probable teams are:

NORTH

Women: Anika Stewart [Masterton], Belinda Day [Ōpaki], Julie O’Brien [Masterton], Hannah Beetham [Gladstone].

Men: William Day [Carterton], Alex Randall [Ōpaki], Matt Spooner [Carterton], Cory Spooner [Carterton].

SOUTH

Women: Gabi Nicholson, Olivia Fenwick, Johanna de Groot, Marta Wojcikowski [all Martinborough].

Men: Niel Henriks [Dry River], Chris Wilkie [Martinborough], Ed Wilkie [Martinborough], Eslyn Beck [Greytown].

CYCLING

Ari Scott had the climbing legs and powered away to win the ACM Wizwireless Hill Climb Champs at Te Wharau on Tuesday evening. Scott ground out the gruelling 6.8km ascent to a height of about 314m in an impressive time of 16 minutes nine seconds.

Teenager Leroux van der Leek was second in 17:08, with Nick On third in 18:53. The next race on Tuesday is the ACM road race champs, which will be a mass start road race taking in two laps of the Millars Road circuit.
