Rain ruins nationals

The rain had the final say at Sunday’s National Drag Racing Championship round at the Masterton Motorplex.

Only three classes – competition, top street, and modified – completed their finals before the rain set in about 2pm Sunday.

Motorplex manager Bob Wilton is uncertain whether the incomplete classes will be finished at a later meeting or whether the drivers will receive points.

What racing there was, though, provided some highlights, with Roger Binnema setting a new national record of about 6.6 seconds in the top street class in his 2018 Chev Camaro.

Drag racing legend Tony Marsh also had the crowd on the edge of their seats with sparks flying off his Ford Maverick top doorslammer.

“I watched him one run, and he had sparks coming off his pipes from one end of the track to the other through a vibration,” Wilton said.

“It started wearing the exhaust pipes away, and they’re not cheap and are made out of titanium.”

The meeting also featured the vintage gasser class, which kept the crowd entertained.

Wilton was rapt with the turnout of 210 cars and bikes, well above expectations for the two-day meeting.

The next meeting is the popular Dragstalgia – Wild Bunch Wars on the weekend of January 6–7.
