Masterton’s Ben Campbell’s good form on the Asian Tour continued with a third-place finish in the Indonesian Masters.
Hot off the back of his first Asian Tour victory in the previous weekend’s Hong Kong Open, Campbell went to Jakarata confident of another good showing, but the Queenstown-based professional had to go about it the hard way after slumping to a first-round two-over-par 73, which saw him tied for 93rd and in danger of missing the cut.
Campbell put that poor opening round behind him and moved to share of 29th with a bogey-free six under par 65 in the second round.
A brilliant third-round eight under par 63, which included seven birdies and an eagle, had Campbell tied for third, but eight shots off the leader, India’s Gaganjeet Bhuller, entering the final round.
Campbell turned in another stunning 18 holes on the final day, with another 65, but could only close the gap by two shots to Bhuller, who finished with a remarkable 24 under, five shots clear of runner-up and countryman Karandeep Kochhar.
A birdie on the final hole was enough to snatch a share of third place with Spain’s David Puig at an impressive 18 under.
Campbell pocketed US$84,750 for his third placing, taking his earnings to US$444,750 [about NZ$741,000] over the last two weekends. His next tournament will be the Australian PGA Championship in Brisbane before the Australian Open in Sydney.
