Weather ahead

The latest forecast is for a cloudy week with the odd shower and largely westerly winds to keep things interesting. MetService said this morning will bring areas of morning frost and cloud, clearing to fine with westerlies growing strong in exposed places. Tomorrow and Wednesday have isolated showers rolling through, and Thursday is looking mainly fine with fresh north westerlies easing. Masterton’s reaching a high of 18 degrees Celsius this week,while Thursday and Friday are expected to record lows of four to seven degC.

Traffic updates

There is stop-go traffic control in place on SH2 in Carterton, near Pembroke St for Waka Kotahi to carry out road repairs. These works are ongoing from last night until Thursday night, 7pm to 5.30am. There is still the same traffic control day and night on the SH2 Remutaka Hill, on the Featherston side, because slip repairs are ongoing. Finally, on SH2 between Masterton and Carterton there is a road closure in one direction at a time for project work. This is in place From Saturday to Thursday nights, 9pm to 4.30am. A detour is signposted via local roads.

Smoke and mirrors

It was a quiet weekend for the region’s fire responders, but the crew at Masterton Brigade did respond to one callout at 9.30am yesterday, where a thick, black plume of smoke was reported in Masterton. A spokesperson for Fire and Emergency NZ said it transpired that the smoke was coming from a controlled incinerator fire, so no actions were necessary.

Wellbeing survey

It’s less then one week until the Tararua District Council’s post-cyclone wellbeing survey closes. The survey will let the council know how cyclone-impacted communities are feeling seven months after Cyclone Gabrielle blew through. Feedback will impact future events and ongoing support offered. Everyone who completes the survey will be in the draw to win one of three $100 New World Vouchers, courtesy of Rural Support Tararua. To find the link to the online survey, head to the council’s Facebook Page. The survey closes this Saturday.
