A woman was killed, and a man left in a critical condition after a car and truck collided just outside Dalefield School, Carterton on Monday.

Police, fire crews, and ambulance staff were called to the intersection of Dalefield Rd and Thomas Rd at 11.37am.

Wairarapa Police response manager Senior Sergeant Jen Hansen said the driver of the car, a woman in her 70s, died at the scene and a male passenger had been taken to Wairarapa Hospital in a critical condition.

The driver of the truck had “no reported injuries”.

Hansen said the truck had been heading east along Dalefield Rd towards Carterton and the car had been travelling south along Thomas Rd when the crash occurred.

There is a stop sign on Thomas Rd before entering Dalefield Rd.

Cordons were put in place along Dalefield and Thomas roads for several hours as the serious crash unit and the commercial vehicle investigation unit investigated.

People commenting on a Times-Age Facebook post expressed their concern about the corner with one person writing, “you have to virtually be out on the road to see clearly both ways”.

Wairarapa District Health Board communications manager Anna Cardno said the passenger – a 42-year-old man – was taken to Wairarapa Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Wellington Hospital by Life Flight.
